I’ve watched a lot of movies in my life.
During the winter break of 1998, I started rating them on IMDB. I tried to remember all the movies I’d seen up to that point and rated those. I have rated every movie I’ve seen since.
For years I worried that I would lose access to all my ratings data. IMDB did not provide an API, and knowing Amazon owned IMDB, I felt insecure about the plug being pulled one day.
A few months ago I finally wrote a script to download the data and present it in a nice form.
This page has my ratings history, along with other information.
A guide to what a given rating means:
- >= 8: Recommend to others
- 7: Liked it, but broke even with the time spent watching
- 6: Liked it, but wasn’t worth the time
- 5: Neutral
- < 5: Hated it: Picked number at random
I also made another page with some analytics.
One caveat: I used a heuristic to distinguish movies with TV shows/miniseries — namely whether the year contains a hyphen. As you may notice, the heuristic is not entirely accurate.
